Kathmandu - Hariprabha Khadgi, Deputy Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, has proposed that the government provide housewife allowances to all women who work at home. She said that many women cannot advance without pay for their work. Khadgi made this proposal at an event held in Kathmandu. She also expressed her intention to raise this issue with the central government.
"We women work from morning till night. But what about our wages? I have already raised this issue with the ministers," Khadgi said.
The central government has suggested starting monthly wages of one hundred rupees for women who work from morning until evening. "We need to think about what we can do for women who work from morning till evening. My proposal is to give housewife allowances to women who cook and clean at home. Start with one hundred rupees. The municipality can add more as they see fit. The elderly allowance is also starting at one hundred rupees. Therefore, we should give housewife allowances as well," Khadgi said.
"If there is a dispute between the husband and wife, how difficult is it for women living in poverty? The son has a fever, but there is no money to buy medicine for the mother. If we give housewife allowances, the mother can buy medicine without worrying about money. But without even one rupee, the son may die," she added.
